How to Make an Easy Grilled Margherita Cheese Sandwich?

To make this delectable, gooey cheese sandwich, begin by placing a slice of bread on a clean surface. Next, generously spread a dollop of your preferred store-bought marinara sauce over the bread, ensuring it covers the surface evenly. Now, it’s time to add the star ingredient – some delectable, fresh mozzarella cheese. Lay the cheese lovingly over the marinara sauce, making sure to cover the bread entirely.

For a convenient way to cut fresh mozzarella, simply place it in the freezer for about 15 minutes before assembling your sandwiches. After that, opt for ripe and juicy tomatoes, and enhance their flavor by sprinkling a gentle layer of garlic powder, pepper, and a pinch of salt. Drizzle some olive oil over the tomatoes, and finish off by adding delightful fresh basil leaves. You can choose to use whole basil leaves or tear them slightly before adding to your sandwich for an extra burst of flavor.

Since I couldn’t find fresh basil at any nearby grocery stores, I decided to use mint leaves instead. Surprisingly, it turned out to be equally delicious and full of flavor. To prepare the sandwich, brush the top of the bread with some butter, and then toast or grill it on both sides with butter over medium flame for approximately 2 to 4 minutes.

In case you’re having trouble getting the fresh cheese to melt properly, you can pop the sandwich in the oven for an extra few minutes, around 2-3 minutes, at 350°F.

The end result was nothing short of sensational, and my family absolutely loved it. I’m excited to prepare this sandwich again for a potluck party we’re having this coming weekend.

  • 12 Bread slices of your choice
  • 6 tbsp Marinara sauce
  • 8 oz Fresh Mozzarella cheese, cut into slices
  • 3 large Tomatoes, sliced
  • Garlic powder, to taste
  • Black pepper powder, to taste

  • 1 to 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • ½ cup Basil leaves or Mint leaves, loosely packed
  • 6 tbsp Butter melted

Instructions

  • To prepare these delicious sandwiches, start by spreading about a tablespoon of marinara sauce on one side of each of the 12 bread slices. Now, evenly distribute the slices of fresh mozzarella and tomatoes on top of the sauce.
  • After placing the tomatoes, sprinkle them with a pinch of salt, black pepper powder, and garlic powder for added flavor. Next, drizzle a generous amount of olive oil over the tomatoes and place 5 to 6 basil leaves on each slice to enhance the taste.
  • For the finishing touch, take the remaining bread slices and gently place them on top of the prepared ones. Brush the top of each sandwich with melted butter to give it a nice golden-brown crust.
  • Begin by heating a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat on your stovetop.
  • Take your sandwich and place it in the pan with the buttered side facing down. Then, brush the other side of the sandwich with butter as well.
  • Allow the sandwich to cook for about 1 ½ to 2 minutes on each side. You'll know it's ready when both sides turn a beautiful golden brown, and the cheese inside starts to melt and ooze out enticingly.
  • If you find that the cheese hasn't fully melted yet, don't worry! Simply transfer the sandwich to a preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius) for an additional 2 to 3 minutes.
Once the cheese has melted to perfection, your Grilled Margherita Sandwich is now ready to be served. Make sure to serve it immediately to enjoy its delightful flavors to the fullest.

Notes

For the convenience of slicing fresh mozzarella effortlessly, consider placing it in the freezer for approximately 15 minutes before assembling your sandwiches. This step is optional but can yield cleaner slices.

In this recipe, I opted for a parmesan-romano-flavored pasta sauce as a delightful addition.
