To achieve a mouthwatering grilled cheese, start by selecting a sharp and creamy cheese that melts nicely. I used Gouda, but Monterey Jack, cheddar, Havarti, or even American cheese work well too. Grate the cheese using the larger side of a box grater for easier melting.
2. Butter The Bread
The key to a great grilled cheese is using good bread and cheese. I prefer thick white bread. Spread unsalted butter on one side of each slice generously. I use unsalted butter as the cheese adds enough saltiness.
3. Add Cheese
Preheat pan to medium-low. Place one bread slice, butter side down, on the hot pan. Adjust pan temperature to prevent burning. Add generous cheese to cover the entire slice.
4. Grill In Frying Pan
Place the second bread slice on top of the cheese, butter side up this time.
Use a spatula to lift the grilled slice and check for golden brown color. Flip the entire sandwich.
Wait a minute or two for cooking and check the bottom slice for a golden brown appearance. The cheese should be melted completely at this point as well.
